Altered Heart

Altered HeartAltered Heart by Kate Steele

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Rio gets bitten by a psychotic alpha werewolf and made his “pet.” He’s rescued by Mick, who takes him home and helps him through his first transition.

This isn’t amazing literature, but it was a fun read while I sat in Panera and ate some oatmeal — gotta love that cinnamon crunch topping!

Prey (Infected, #1)

Prey (Infected, #1)Prey by Andrea Speed

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a great start to a series. Roan, a lion shifter, is a PI; he’s contrary and determined, and he has a smart mouth. I love him.

It’s an interesting universe that the author has created. Shifters are looked down upon by some people and nearly worshiped as gods by others. Really, they’re just people who turn into cats 5 days a month.

Paris, Roan’s boyfriend, is my problem with the series. I like him a lot. And I think he’s going to die in the next book, so I’m afraid to read it.

Off Campus (Bend or Break, #1)

Off Campus (Bend or Break, #1)Off Campus by Amy Jo Cousins

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Santino Hassell tweeted that he loved this book, so I decided to give it a try. I can see why he likes it: It’s got the same kind of emotional baggage that has to be dealt with that his novels do.

Here’s the crux of the book for me:

He didn’t understand what had happened to him, but he wasn’t dumb enough to miss the fucking lesson. For a year and a half, he’d talked to no one, relied on no one and made it through with sheer willpower. Now, in less than four weeks, he’d vomited the worst of his secrets all over, had embarrassed himself in front of more people than he could count, and he’d ended up with so much help he couldn’t wrap his brain around it.

It’s all about friendship and love and learning to trust people.

The Long Way Home

The Long Way HomeThe Long Way Home by Z.A. Maxfield

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really liked both main characters: Quinn, the psychic, and Connor, the cop.

I believe in psychics so much that I think it’s kind of weird when people don’t believe that such talent exists. Connor starts out that way, but it makes sense when we learn about his past. And when he realizes that Quinn’s talent is real … such kindness and support.

Nice mystery. Some family stuff that gets resolved. A good book that’s worth reading.

The Heart of Texas (Texas, #1)

The Heart of Texas (Texas, #1)The Heart of Texas by R.J. Scott

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a Dynasty-style family situation: Big Texas money and plotting and thieving and rape and domestic violence. There’s a lot going on.

At the heart are two genuinely nice guys, and this is their story. The series goes on for another four or five books, but I think I’ll stop here. I really don’t want to deal with the drama that’s coming up in the rest of the books.

PsyCop Briefs: Volume 1

PsyCop Briefs: Volume 1PsyCop Briefs: Volume 1 by Jordan Castillo Price

Vic is one of my favorite characters in the world. If he was a real person, I’d want to be his friend.

It was great hanging out with him again for a while. The stories were great, but I think I would have arranged them chronologically. I found it disconcerting to hop around in time, and it was hard to remember exactly what people knew or were doing. That’s why it didn’t get 5 stars.

Finally: Three cheers for a story with Uncle Leon and his ghostly hand!

The Last Detective (Peter Diamond, #1

The Last Detective (Peter Diamond, #1)The Last Detective by Peter Lovesey

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I had high hopes when I started the book. It’s the first in 16-book (at the moment) series. But I don’t like the main character. He’s pompous and short-tempered. Yeah, he’s smart, but I’d expect that of a police detective.

The author did provide clues that I picked up along the way. And I figured out who the murderer was. But the murderer had to confess: There was no way that the reader could have a solid reason to know it was him/her. It was just a gut feeling on my part.

I’m feeling quite dissatisfied at the moment.
